Dozens of install steps, down to a handful

An installer and patcher for a large multi-service system that replaced dozens of manual, order-sensitive steps with a handful of guided ones — the same way every time, with a record of what was done.

Client type
Professional work
Problem
Standing up a large system meant following a long document of manual steps across multiple machines, in a precise order. Every install was slightly different, and the differences showed up later as outages.
What I built
A guided installer and patcher: it captures the environment once, generates the configuration, installs and verifies each component in order, applies updates the same way, and writes a report. If a step fails it stops with a clear explanation and can resume where it left off.
Result
Installs that took days take hours, run identically every time, and leave an audit trail. Fewer surprises in production, and new engineers can run an install in their first week.
Stack
Python · Ansible / AWX · Linux · Bash

Professional work, described in general terms — no programs, customers or sensitive details. I’m happy to talk through the specifics that I can in conversation.

The situation

A system with dozens of moving parts had to be installed repeatedly in environments that were each slightly different. The procedure lived in a long document and in a few people’s heads. It worked — mostly — but it depended on the right person being in the room, and every small deviation became a problem weeks later.

What I did

I turned the document into software. The tool asks about the environment once, generates every configuration file from the answers, installs and verifies each component in order, and writes a report. Patching uses the same path, so updates are as repeatable as a fresh install. If a step fails it stops with a clear explanation and picks up where it left off.

What changed

The install became boring, which is the goal. It runs the same way every time, it’s auditable, and it no longer depends on who’s available that week.
